Well, from the message it looks like your Salesforce account is not the Developer Edition so you must have gotten the 30-day free trial account or something. In Max's instructions on page 2 of Lab 1a, she gives you think link to follow to get the account and she says to be sure not to get the 30-day free trial. (It's also in big red, bold letters on the cover page.) Does the top of your Salesforce screen say something about "29 days left in trial")?
If so, then unfortunately, you'll need to get a new Salesforce account, a Developer Edition one, by going to the link Max gives in the instructions and then redo the work in that one because there's no way to move your work from the 30-day free trial one into the new one. Sorry.
