Well, it's hard to tell without seeing a screencap but my guess is that you managed to click into the old interface ("Classic") instead of the new one called "Lightning." If that's the case, then you'll see an option to click "Switch to Lightning Interface" in the upper right, next to your name. Click on that and then you should see the proper interface that matches what's in the instructions.
If that doesn't solve it then you'll need to send a screencap showing what you're seeing and we can go from there.
